Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
I recently had the pleasure of meeting with representatives of our student leadership team who shared a range of ideas they had come up with to improve the school. It was great to hear their pride in our school and the thoughtful ideas they had developed to improve the experiences for children at St Michael’s. They have asked me to share the below fundraising opportunity as they raise money to build equipment on the playground.
A message from our student leadership team:
The student leaders are holding a fundraising event on our Footy Colours Day on Thursday 15th September. We are fundraising to build a gaga pit on the oval. Gaga is a variant of dodgeball that is played in a gaga "pit". The game combines dodging, striking, running, and jumping, with the objective of being the last person standing. As student leaders we felt our school needed more activities to do during recess and lunch. Students are asked to wear their footy colours and bring a gold coin donation. This money will be used to buy material to build the gaga pit. Thank you for your support!

Online safety is a continual conversation and frustration for both parents and teachers. Incidents that occur online often have a flow on effect at school and the children's friendship groups.
The esafety commissioner webpage ( https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents ) provides support for parents as they help you to navigate safe experiences for your family online. They have a series of short videos and easy to read fact sheets with translations if required to help you talk to your children about online safety. Topics include:
- Topic 1: Helping your family stay safe online
- Topic 2: Getting started with social media
- Topic 3: Safer online gaming
- Topic 4: Getting help when your child is being bullied online
They are also offering a free webinar on Thursday 25th August that talks about the social media apps - tiktok, instagram and YouTube. It is aimed for parents of children aged 8 - 13.

The Parents and Friends committee are running a
Father’s Day Stall
On Friday 26th August
during school hours.
If you would like your child/ren to have the
opportunity to purchase from the stall
please log onto CDFpay to allocate them a Gift bundle.
Purchases must be made by 10:00pm Thursday 25th August.
Cash cannot be accepted on the day.
Cost =$5 per Gift Bundle
Each gift bundle will consist of two items chosen by your child.
As stock is limited, the number of Gift Bundles is capped at a maximum of 2 per Child.
***Helpers for the stall will be warmly welcomed.***

“People will come from everywhere and they will sit at God’s table.” The most important message to take away from this gospel is that we are ALL children of God no matter who we are. God does not judge us by how we look or how rich we are. God loves us and accepts us as we are - regardless of what we look like and how we act!
How do we judge others? Do we focus on the things that are not important, on the way they dress or the way they wear their hair? Do we give them the same grace that God gives us?
This week's gospel tells us that God is not impressed by wealth or prestige. What God wants of us is to be faithful followers of Jesus …. how can we live like this every day?
At the end of Week 6, after a fabulous effort to our fundraising, we have raised approximately $260. This means that we have already raised enough money to buy two goats for the Goat Rearing Centre in Ethiopia.
Did you know that the people of Emdibir not only use the goats to breed with but as a source of milk. Famine remains a huge issue in many parts of Ethiopia and malnutrition is a contributing factor to the deaths of many children. Goats milk is a highly nutritional product and is helping to save many lives. Through the expansion of the Goat Rearing Centre many more families will have access to this live saving milk
The second Guess the Lolly jar was won by Tommy in Grade 3/4E with a winning guess of 184. Our third lolly jar is almost sold!
Colouring competitions are selling well. These are also 50c for an entry. Entries for the Colouring Competition will close this Friday 26th August.
Each week students from each class are awarded Student of the Week certificates. These children are nominated for the example they have been within the school based on the School Wide Expectation focus for that week. The weekly focus will be from Wednesday until Tuesday the following week. Awards will be presented to students at assembly on Friday.
In Week 6 the School Wide Expectation focus was Resilience :

Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge 2022
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and St Michael's is excited to be participating. The PRC application offers a range of exciting features including:
- access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
- a modern user-friendly interface
- rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
- the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 2 September 2022.
Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.
All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
