Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
We had a lovely time on Friday with Andrew Chinn. The children (and staff) laughed and sang their way through the day. It was lovely to see the children shine and want to be up the front with Andrew - he has a lovely way of including the children. Who knew the “Jimmy shimmy” was a thing! Thank you also to the parents who were able to join us in the afternoon and a very special thank you to Sue Rickwood for organising this day.
School Uniform
After being approached by some parents I have been speaking to the Lowes Area Manager about some alternatives to our school uniform. We are currently exploring a winter jacket, a different style track pant and a skort for the students for sport days as an option for those students who don’t like shorts. We have samples of the skort (it is the wrong colour but you will get a sense of the style) and track pants for people to have a look at it. We are still looking for an affordable winter jacket. Call into the school office if you would like to have a look at these items and please let us know your thoughts.
E-safety update
As children start to navigate the online world and interact with others more independently, they are more likely to be exposed to risks of bullying or unwanted contact, accidentally coming across inappropriate content or racking up bills through in-app purchases.
Over the past week there have been increasingly disturbing content being shared online including false, misleading or historical information. The eSafety Commissioner (eSafety) is aware of distressing content and continues to work with social media companies to identify and remove illegal and restricted material wherever possible.
Your guidance can help them be aware of the risks and understand what is expected of them. Let them know you are always there to support them.
It's important to stay open and talk to your children about the content they are seeing online. Encourage them to tell you what they have seen and how they feel – especially if they are exposed to material that is distressing or violent.
Sometimes parents and carers might need to take extra precautions to protect their children from seeing disturbing content online.
The following guide from the e-safety commission may help you support your child as they navigate the online world.

Sunday's gospel is quite a story! Jesus is telling a parable about a wedding feast, but it’s not your typical wedding. In this parable God is the king and there are three very distinct groups. The first people invited are those who reject God’s way of living. The second people are those who don’t expect the invitation but are delighted when it comes, and they accept it wholeheartedly. And the third, a person not properly dressed represents those who may say that they have accepted God’s invitation, but whose life choices show that they have not yet really said yes to God.
When have you been among the first group – those who don’t care about church, who don’t want to be involved with anything ‘churchy’, and who don’t think faith is relevant today? What do you think Jesus would say to you about this attitude?
When have you been among the second group – those who see that faith is important, who try to live their faith by doing works of service, and who aren’t embarrassed by their relationship with God? What do you think Jesus would say to you about this attitude?
When have you been among the third group – those who say that faith is important and yet don’t really practise their faith? What do you think Jesus would say to you about this attitude?
Each year at St Michaels we support several different organisations as part of our Mission Outreach; including Caritas, St Vincent de Paul and Catholic Mission. As a Catholic Community we are inspired by the life of Jesus to reach out to those in this world that are marginalised or less fortunate than we are. Our mission focus for the rest of this year is on the work of Catholic Mission in Timor-Leste.
This year Catholic Mission are supporting the work of the Salesian Sisters in Timor-Leste with 2 important projects: the Don Bosco Children’s Home and the Maria Auxiliadora Medical Clinic. These are two very important services that the Salesian Sisters have established to support the people in the community.
At St Michaels we are focusing our fundraising efforts on the Children's home. The staff at the Don Bosco Children’s Home under the guidance of the Salesian Sisters not only provide a home for many children but give them access to education. Every $20 that we raise at St Michaels will provide the students with books and equipment to aid their learning.
We began our fundraising campaign last term, raising $600 on our casual clothes day. The first of this term's efforts will start this week with a Colouring Competition and a ‘Guess the lollies in the jar’. The students from the Mission Team will come around to the classrooms over the next few days to speak with the children. Entry in both of these competitions will be 50c
If you would like to learn more about the work that Catholic Mission are doing please check out the website Socktober: for mission month
Each week students from each class are awarded Student of the Week certificates. These children are nominated for the example they have been within the school based on the School Wide Expectation focus for that week. The weekly focus will be from Wednesday until Tuesday the following week. Awards will be presented to students at assembly on Friday.
In Week 3 the School Wide Expectation focus is Safety :
I have the right to feel safe in our school environment.
