Dear Parents, Guardian and Carers,
Yesterday our grade six captains attended the Remembrance Day Service at the Traralgon Cenotaph as representatives of our school. Leila, Clementine, Tommy and Olivia have been outstanding ambassadors for our school throughout the year and we appreciate the commitment and dedication they have shown in their roles.
Remembrance Day is a solemn occasion observed each year to pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend freedom, justice, and peace. From the fields of Flanders to the hills of Normandy, from the skies above Britain to the deserts of the Middle East, the bravery of our soldiers is etched into the very fabric of history.
While Remembrance Day is a time of sombre reflection, it is also an opportunity to look forward with hope. The world has changed, and we continue to face challenges that test our resilience. However, the legacy of those who gave their lives reminds us that peace is not a passive state but an active pursuit. As we stand together in remembrance, let us also stand united in our efforts for peace. Whether through diplomatic initiatives, humanitarian aid, or simple acts of kindness, we each have a role in shaping a more peaceful future.
The challenges of today may differ from those faced by the soldiers of the past, but the need for peace remains as urgent as ever. Let us use this Remembrance Day not only as a time of reflection but also as a call to action—an opportunity to commit ourselves to the values of peace, tolerance, and cooperation.
MARKET DAY
On Friday, 15th November, our Grade 5/6 students will be hosting the annual Market Day Stall! This year, our goal is to raise much-needed funds for Catholic Missions. The students have been working hard, bringing their business ideas to life and preparing a range of exciting items for sale, along with fun games to enjoy.
All students are encouraged to bring some money on the day to support this wonderful cause. Every purchase helps contribute to the fundraising effort, so we hope to see lots of enthusiasm for our Market Day! Thank you for supporting our students as they put their creativity and skills into action for a good cause.
SUPERHERO DAY
Thank you for your support of Superhero Day. We had a great day with all sorts of superheroes arriving at school, including: doctors, firefighters, emergency service people, caped crusaders and even Jesus. The students spent some time recycling odd, old socks and turning them into something new and useful.
Congratulations to our school community .... together we have raised $383 towards our Catholic Mission Fundraising.
Thank you for the kind words and warm welcome as I returned to school after my long service leave. It is lovely to be back.
A huge thank you to Lia DiCorleto and Sharon Scholtes who did an amazing job in my absence.
Kind regards
Jodie
In the week beginning November the 25th, the school will celebrate an Italian cultural week. A number of things will happen during this week..
Firstly, there will be a school incursion on Monday the 25th of November. This will be held in the school hall. We have an Italian magician coming to perform 2 shows during the day for the children.
On Friday the 29th of November at about 9am, we will have a school parade. Parents, family and friends are warmly welcomed to attend. The children are invited to dress up in the Italian colours (green, white and red) or as an Italian character.
Some simple ideas are as follows:
- a pizza chef - just need a pizza box and an apron
- a gondolier driver - a stripey top and black pants
- gelato (ice cream) - a colourful wig with brown clothing
- a Carnevale participant- a mask (can be made or Spotlight has some)
- a soccer player - soccer top and soccer ball
- a painter like Michelangelo - school art smock or old shirt and a paintbrush
- any clothing with the Italian colours (red, white green) - some children wear green sports tops on sports day and all children have a red polo shirt.
- An Italian flag
During this week, the children will also be able to taste some gelati. If your child is not able to have gelati because of health issues, please contact Carla Scholtes on the email address below to arrange an alternative. We usually also have available gluten and dairy free sorbet, such as Gelativo from Woolies but please let her know if your child will need this. The gelati will be served in cups, not cones. In this gospel, Jesus condemns the scribes who parade their wealth, seeking earthly power and glory. They take the front seats in synagogue; and expect to be seated in the place of honour at banquets. Whilst parading their wealth and feasting at banquets, they are also swallowing up the property of widows – taking advantage of those in need. One of the duties of the scribes was to administer the proper payment of Temple taxes. Rather than a great act of generosity, we can now see the widow’s payment of Temple tax as a burdensome, heart-wrenching obligation to pay the very last coins she had to a corrupt, uncaring system. In this passage, whilst Jesus hates the scribes’ parading around and claiming honour that is not their due, what really sees him condemn them is their mistreatment of widows ‘while making a show of lengthy prayers’. We cannot praise God in prayer while at the same time mistreating our neighbour. That is hypocrisy! Our actions are an extension of our prayer. We cannot celebrate the Eucharist on Sundays and fail to live it the rest of the week!
Each week students from each class are awarded Student of the Week certificates. These children are nominated for the example they have been within the school based on the School Wide Expectation focus for that week. The weekly focus will be from Wednesday until Tuesday the following week. Awards will be presented to students at assembly on Friday.
In Week 6 the School Wide Expectation focus is Safety:
I have the right to feel safe in our school environment.
