Dear Parents, Guardian and Carers,
The staff and students of St Michael’s Primary school invite past and present students, parents and staff to join us as we farewell staff who will be leaving our school community at the end of 2024.
Our retiring staff:
Mrs Sue Hill who commenced her career at St Michael’s in 1981.
Mrs Debbie Gilmour who commenced her career at St Michael’s in 2000.
Mrs Catherine Taylor who commenced her career at St Michael’s in 2017.
We will also farewell the following staff members who are moving on to new opportunities:
Mrs Jodie Ware
Mrs Louise Clarke
Mrs Sharon Dortmans
Mrs Katie Calabrese
We will gather for our end of year school mass on Friday 6th December at 9:30 am and this will be followed by a morning tea in the hall where our leaving staff will be the guests of honour. At the end of recess, all current staff and students will gather in the hall for a special assembly. We hope many of our current and past school community will join us for this occasion.
At the end of 2024, we also say a goodbye to Miss Katilin Vacca and Miss Phoebe Trembath who are both taking 12 months leave to pursue exciting new experiences. We hope to see both Kaitlin and Phoebe back at St Michael’s in 2026.
Change to Stationery orders in 2025
As a school we have made the decision to not send booklists home this year largely due to the closure of our regular supplier, Seymour Street newsagency. The teachers will be doing bulk orders of all supplies required by the children in their classrooms for 2025, therefore parents are not required to purchase stationery for their children next year. These will be ready for the children when school commences.
Student success
Jack Brady recently received the MCC Clay Target Shooting encouragement award in memory of John Marshall. This was presented in the Committee Room at the MCG and he has his name on a trophy which is displayed in the entrance at gate 2. This is a result of the excellent results Jack has received throughout this year.
Kind regards
Jodie
St Michael's 2024 Art Exhibition
St Michael’s students and staff invite you to the St Michael’s 2024 Art Exhibition and family afternoon on Friday 22nd November between 1:45 pm – 3:00 pm. Visitors will be able to view an exhibition of student art in the school hall and in the classrooms, as well as join with the students and staff in an afternoon of art activities.
We invite families (parents, grandparents, siblings) to take this opportunity to view a showcase of art that the children have created throughout the year. Art activities will be occurring in all classes across the afternoon and family members are invited to join with their children to complete these.
Please take note of the following organisational details for the day:
- All visitors will be required to sign in on arrival. To cater for the number of visitors we anticipate, there will be multiple points throughout the school for this to occur - either the school front gate entrance or the entrance near the church. Visitors are recommended to have a mobile phone to ensure this process runs smoothly.
- To manage the number of people viewing the art exhibition at one time, visits into the exhibition will be timetabled based on surnames. Families can choose to join in art activities in classrooms while they wait for their turn to visit the exhibition or plan their arrival closer to the scheduled time. The approximate times for these visits are as follows:
1:50pm | Families with a surname between A-G |
2:20pm | Families with a surname between H-O |
2:40pm | Families with a surname between P-Z |
Please note that due to the hall being used for Before and After school care program, these are the only times that the artwork can be viewed.
This week’s gospel continues through the discourse of chapter 13 in the Gospel of Mark. Chapter 13 is devoted to discourse about the future. Jesus has foretold the destruction of the Temple and the fall of Jerusalem. He has also predicted war on a massive scale and the persecution of his followers. Now, in this passage, Jesus predicts the return of the Son of Man and the fulfilment of the kingdom of God.
Whilst the community who were the intended audience of the Gospel of Mark were expecting the return of Jesus and the end times to occur during their lifetimes, nearly two thousand years later we realise that wasn’t the case. In the midst of this despair and fear, the followers of Jesus are challenged to remember the teachings of the one they follow. This passage is written for them as an encouragement to not give up in the face of what appears to be overwhelming odds. It is a call to hope.
Today, as in Mark’s time, many people approach the future and change with fear and apprehension. As Christian people we are called to be optimistic and hopeful as we approach the future. We know that God is good, that God loves us unconditionally and that God has a dream for us. That is the simple basis of Christian hope.
In the week beginning November the 25th, the school will celebrate an Italian cultural week. A number of things will happen during this week..
Firstly, there will be a school incursion on Monday the 25th of November. This will be held in the school hall. We have an Italian magician coming to perform 2 shows during the day for the children.
On Friday the 29th of November at about 9am, we will have a school parade. Parents, family and friends are warmly welcomed to attend. The children are invited to dress up in the Italian colours (green, white and red) or as an Italian character.
Some simple ideas are as follows:
- a pizza chef - just need a pizza box and an apron
- a gondolier driver - a stripey top and black pants
- gelato (ice cream) - a colourful wig with brown clothing
- a Carnevale participant- a mask (can be made or Spotlight has some)
- a soccer player - soccer top and soccer ball
- a painter like Michelangelo - school art smock or old shirt and a paintbrush
- any clothing with the Italian colours (red, white green) - some children wear green sports tops on sports day and all children have a red polo shirt.
- An Italian flag
During this week, the children will also be able to taste some gelati. If your child is not able to have gelati because of health issues, please contact Carla Scholtes on the email address below to arrange an alternative. We usually also have available gluten and dairy free sorbet, such as Gelativo from Woolies but please let her know if your child will need this. The gelati will be served in cups, not cones. (cscholtes@stmtraralgon.catholic.edu.au).
Each week students from each class are awarded Student of the Week certificates. These children are nominated for the example they have been within the school based on the School Wide Expectation focus for that week. The weekly focus will be from Wednesday until Tuesday the following week. Awards will be presented to students in the classrooms on Friday.
In Week 7 the School Wide Expectation focus is Respect:
I treat my peers, teachers and learning environment with respect.
I show appreciation for the efforts of others.
I speak kindly to others.
I show justice and fairness to all.
I listen carefully to others.
