Dear Parent, Guardians and Carers,
Thank you once again for your ongoing support with remote learning. The mental health of our families is paramount at this time, so please go gently with yourselves, allow time for some fun activities with your children and make the most of the warmer weather expected this week.
At this stage we are unsure of what next week will look like, so in order to allow some certainty for those families who are essential workers we will send out the link for next week’s onsite supervision with this newsletter. Please complete and return prior to Sunday 3pm when it will close. Any requests after that cut off time can be made to the school on Monday morning. Please remember to send through the updated permits as well.
Onsite Intention Form 6th -10th September
Two of our grade 4 students have showcased their art talents in a nationwide competition conducted by Zart Art. Chelsea and Amelie joined 4000 students from around Australia and created an artwork on the theme: Our Celebration of Australia.
Amelie’s artwork was entitled ‘Wildlife in the Outback’. Amelie attends art classes at a local art studio and also enjoys doing online watercolour courses with Torquay artist, Natalie Martin. Amelie said “I got my inspiration from local artist Celia Rosser’s artwork, she draws a lot of native plants so I thought it might be a good idea to do a banksia. The banksia looked plain by itself so I decided to add a black cockatoo to contrast the banksia”. Amelie’s art was one of 20 pieces in her category to be included in the short listed section for final judging and she received a $50 voucher as recognition.
Chelsea created an artwork entitled ‘‘Kookaburra.’ Chelsea also attends art lessons locally outside of school and her art instructor supported Chelsea by providing her with the materials to complete her art piece which she painted in her free time at home. Chelsea completed the art over a 4 day period, spending several hours each day working on her creation. Chelsea chose a kookaburra for her art as she felt it was a great representation of Australia. Chelsea painted her art using acrylic paints.
We are very proud of both girls and the beautiful artwork that they have created. It is wonderful to see our students pursuing their interests and developing their skills and talents.

Mk 7:1 - 8, 14 - 15, 21 - 23
In this week’s gospel the Pharisees and scribes questioned the actions of the disciples. In response, Jesus accused them of honouring him ‘with only lip-service while their hearts were far away.’ Jesus warns us against confusing God’s law with man-made rules and practices. God’s law is designed to form our hearts, our values, so that we live in a way that ensures everyone’s well-being. Sometimes we think of laws as restrictive and oppressive to our freedom. The emphasis today is that laws do in fact make our lives easier; and that God’s law in particular frees our hearts from ways of acting that makes us unhappy. We can consider God’s law and Jesus’ teaching as a gift, one that touches and forms our hearts to love God and to love, respect, forgive and to be truthful to Christ.
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and St. Michael’s Primary School is excited to be participating. A new application is being used this year that offers a range of exciting features including:
- access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
- a modern user-friendly interface
- rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
- the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 17 September 2021.
Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.
All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
