Education in Faith
At some point in our lives I’m sure we have all heard of this week's gospel - Jesus walks on the water. Jesus calls his disciple, Peter, to step out onto the water and go to him. Peter takes a big risk. Trusting Jesus, Peter steps out onto the lake in the middle of a storm. But when the wind frightens him, he begins to sink. Jesus is disappointed that Peter’s faith isn’t greater. When Jesus asks Peter, ‘Why did you doubt?’ he is asking Peter why he doubted himself. It wasn’t that Peter doubted Jesus; he doubted his own ability to be the equal of his teacher.
When did you ever take a big risk because you trusted someone? Did it work out, or did you get into trouble? Is it wrong to have doubts and fears when you take a big risk, even when you trust the person you are with? Or is that just a healthy, practical, safe way to live? It’s not always easy to have courage to take action!
