News from the Principal
Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
Welcome back to the start of term three. I hope you have had an enjoyable break and are refreshed and ready for term three. Some key things happening this term include a mini olympics day being run by the student leaders, celebration of the Foundation students 100 days at school, grade 4 camp to Coonawarra, Footy Colours day and the Parish celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation for our grade three students. More information about all these events will be shared over the coming weeks. Dates can be found on the school calendar on the website.
The Resilience Project Newsletter - Week 1 Term 3
Late in term one, students from grades 3 - 6 participated in the voluntary and anonymous Resilient Youth Survey which aligned with the Resilience Project. The survey results provide valuable insights into the students’ wellbeing and show areas that we as a school can target to assist the mental health of our students.
The following information is a snapshot of de-identified results around questions regarding sleep behaviours and use of devices.
These graphs show that in grade 5, 58% of females and 45% of males are NOT using devices between 10pm and 6am. In grade 6, 64% of females and 70% of males are NOT using devices between 10pm and 6am. Most of these results are just below the national average.
Our number of males in grades 3-6 that are getting at least 8 hours sleep per night, is significantly lower than the national average. Females in grades 3-6 are on par with the national average.
Using devices between 10pm and 6am and NOT getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night are two factors that significantly affect students’ ability to learn at school (https://www.sleepfoundation.org/how-sleep-works/memory-and-sleep).
What can you do to help? Ensure your child is getting adequate sleep and sufficient screen-free time, particularly late at night.
What will St Michael’s do to help? St Michael’s will continue to educate our students around safe use of devices (through the Inform and Empower sessions and Victorian Curriculum) and healthy lifestyle choices (linked with the Victorian Curriculum).
