News from the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,

Last Friday our School Captains participated in the ANZAC Day parade and ceremony in Traralgon.  Congratulations to Olivia, Branson and Aria. You were great representatives of the school.  It was also lovely to see so many happy faces and waves from the students watching the parade as we walked past. Thank you for your support!

Changes to School gates before school:

To improve the safety and supervision of St Michael’s students before school starts (8:30am to 8:50am), we will be implementing some changes to the school gates. Please take note of the following:

At 8:30am:

  • Kay Street sliding gate - will be opened by the yard duty teacher to let students in and then closed immediately
  • Breed Street Pedestrian Gate (school crossing to the GRAC)  - remains closed at all times. All students are to enter via the front of the school
  • Church Gate - the pedestrian gate between the school hall and the church will be opened as per usual and generally supervised by the yard duty teacher.

All gates will open as per normal of an afternoon. The above arrangements only affect mornings.

STARTING LATE AND FINISHING EARLY

We have noticed there has been an increasing number of students arriving at school late and finishing early. We understand that medical appointments such as doctors or offsite therapist appointments cannot be avoided during the school day but we ask that NON URGENT appointments be scheduled outside school hours.

There are several reasons why this is not okay:

  • Arriving Late - The start of the day is a chance to get settled, complete the before school classroom routine and connect with their teacher and friends before the day officially begins. The children are more settled, they know what is expected of them for the day and they haven’t missed important information about what might be happening in their day.
  • Leaving early - Learning is occurring right up until the end of the day; whether it is completing set work or playing a game with their class there is always a learning intention behind it and a reason why it is important. With The Resilience Project, a lot of the grades are ending their day with a reflection linked to either gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. Reasons such as getting a haircut, avoiding traffic, wet weather are not acceptable reasons for your child to leave early.
  • Frequent absences - these not only impact your child’s learning they also influence their ability to form connections with their peers. By having continual absences they may also find it hard to return, creating anxiety as they need to reconnect with their friends and teacher, relearn the routines of the classroom and establish themselves back into the games on the yard during break times.

Road Closure - Friday 2nd May

Kay Street will be closed on Friday 2nd May for all traffic due to a Rotary Convention being hosted by Latrobe City. Please consider an alternative drop off and school pick up route.

  • Thursday 1st May - State Swimming
  • Friday 2nd May - Respectful Relationships Program for all 5/6s
  • Tuesday 6th May - Confirmation Parent Workshop
