Jn 13:31 - 35

This week we celebrate the fifth Sunday of Easter. In the gospel we revisit the events of the Last Supper, when Jesus explained to the disciples that he would soon be leaving. Jesus knew that the time had come for his earthly life to come to an end. At the last supper Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment, “to love one another as he had loved them.” Throughout His life, Jesus led by example with a life of service to all that crossed his path. He wanted to put right the things that were wrong in the lives of others, to love and care for everyone regardless of who they were. This commandment, “to love one another as he had loved them,” forms the grounding of our Christianity - this is our universal call. But, as we read in the stories of Jesus’ life, this love is so much more than a feeling. It is a call to action! Just as Jesus showed us how to be a servant, our service spreads out of our homes to the community. Our mission is to walk in the footsteps of Jesus.
