Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
Welcome back to the start of term three. I hope you have had an enjoyable break and are refreshed and ready for term three. Some key things happening this term include a mini olympics day being run by the student leaders, celebration of the Foundation students 100 days at school, grade 4 camp to Coonawarra, Footy Colours day and the Parish celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation for our grade three students. More information about all these events will be shared over the coming weeks. Dates can be found on the school calendar on the website.
The Resilience Project Newsletter - Week 1 Term 3
Late in term one, students from grades 3 - 6 participated in the voluntary and anonymous Resilient Youth Survey which aligned with the Resilience Project. The survey results provide valuable insights into the students’ wellbeing and show areas that we as a school can target to assist the mental health of our students.
The following information is a snapshot of de-identified results around questions regarding sleep behaviours and use of devices.
These graphs show that in grade 5, 58% of females and 45% of males are NOT using devices between 10pm and 6am. In grade 6, 64% of females and 70% of males are NOT using devices between 10pm and 6am. Most of these results are just below the national average.
Our number of males in grades 3-6 that are getting at least 8 hours sleep per night, is significantly lower than the national average. Females in grades 3-6 are on par with the national average.
Using devices between 10pm and 6am and NOT getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night are two factors that significantly affect students’ ability to learn at school (https://www.sleepfoundation.org/how-sleep-works/memory-and-sleep).
What can you do to help? Ensure your child is getting adequate sleep and sufficient screen-free time, particularly late at night.
What will St Michael’s do to help? St Michael’s will continue to educate our students around safe use of devices (through the Inform and Empower sessions and Victorian Curriculum) and healthy lifestyle choices (linked with the Victorian Curriculum).

Mark 6:7-13
This week's gospel is a commissioning of the disciples to spread the ministry of Jesus – teaching, healing and casting out demons. It seems rather harsh conditions under which Jesus sends out his disciples. They are to carry nothing but a staff – a walking stick – and to trust completely to the hospitality that they will encounter. For the disciples going out on their mission, it is a challenge to their faith and their trust that God will provide for them. The act of sending out the disciples can also be seen as a challenge to the towns and people that the disciples visited. A challenge for them to fulfil their duty of hospitality – of welcoming the stranger and caring for those in need. By travelling without a ‘fallback position’ the disciples are utterly at the mercy of those they encounter but there is an implicit demand on the other to extend hospitality to the one who seeks it.
How would the disciples be greeted in our world today if they arrived in a country or town with no food, no possessions and calling on the hospitality of the place in which they had arrived? Does this sound familiar? There are refugees and asylum seekers who arrive on our borders and seek the hospitality of our country. They are fleeing inhospitality – often starvation, war, persecution, poverty – and they ask for welcome and hospitality. Unfortunately, in the culture of fear and intolerance that has developed, they are not met with welcome and hospitality; they are met with obstacles, rejection and ill treatment.
The gospel passage challenges us to continue the mission Jesus entrusted to the twelve ….. how can we make a difference in the lives of others?
St Vincent de Paul Visit by Imogen and Nicolette
On Tuesday the 25th of June the Mini Vinnies team went to St Vincent de Paul to find out how they help people. St Vincent de Paul is a society known to help others when they need it. They provide food, toiletries and a place for people to come and eat food or meet new people.
What do they do
St Vincent de Paul provides all types of food that can last a while and they take not only food but other things like toilet paper, lollies, toiletries and gifts for around christmas time. They provide children’s snacks for them to take home and sometimes they even have fresh fruit for people to eat. They sometimes buy these foods but schools and people can donate some of their food for them to feed others.
Who do they help?
St Vincent de Paul doesn’t only help poor people but they help people who could be struggling through money problems or bills and they can’t afford food so Vinnies gives them hampers of food to feed their families.
What does St Michael’s do to help?
St Michaels students and staff members collect cans to donate to St Vincent de Paul and we give them at the Giving Mass.
St Michael’s Primary School has a long tradition of supporting our local St Vincent de Paul Society. Each year we support two collections for St Vinnies: mid year, for the collection of cans for the winter and December, for the Christmas Appeal.
On Friday 26th July at 11:30am, we will celebrate our support of this valuable part of our community with a whole school mass. We extend the invitation to you all to come along and celebrate the Eucharist with us.
We are now collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the St Vinnies winter appeal. These items might include cans of soup, baked beans, vegetables, tuna …… cans that might be used to create a meal.
Thankyou for your support
Each week students from each class are awarded Student of the Week certificates. These children are nominated for the example they have been within the school based on the School Wide Expectation focus for that week. The weekly focus will be from Wednesday until Tuesday the following week. Awards will be presented to students at assembly on Friday.
In Week 1 the School Wide Expectation focus is Safety:
