Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
Welcome back to term 2. It has been lovely to see the children return to school excited to see their friends and teachers. It has been lovely to hear about their holidays and how they enjoyed time with their families.
As I am sure you have noticed, Latrobe City are currently upgrading our school crossing on Kay Street. This has meant a slight change to the position of the crossing whilst these works occur. Two traffic controllers have been employed to assist Helen, the school crossing supervisor in keeping our children safe as they cross. We appreciate your patience and understanding whilst this work is being completed.
I have also been advised that Catholic School Parents Victoria (CSPV) is presenting a free webinar this Saturday 24th April, between 10:30am-12pm for parents of children in primary and secondary school to support parents of children with anxiety.
CSPV provides this opportunity for you to learn from leading anxiety speaker and educator Dr Jodi Richardson. Jodi is the best-selling co-author of Anxious Kids and a regular media commentator on issues related to anxiety, wellbeing and parenting. Jodi works to empower parents, educators & other professionals with powerful new skills and techniques for overcoming the worry, overthinking, immobility and sense of being overwhelmed that come with anxiety.

A reminder that Thursday 29th April is a school closure day. This is one of eight days we are entitled to have to provide professional learning for teachers, outside of the time spent after school. Where possible, we endeavour to spread them out across the year to minimise the impact on families. These dates are listed in the calendar on the website.

We have a new sign in procedure for signing in to St Michael's. You will notice we have a few QR Code points located in the foyer. You are required to scan the St Michael's QR code and the Government QR code if you visit the school. You can now use your phone to scan the QR code for signing in as a visitor or for a student late arrivals or early departures. Using your phone is preferable to using the ipad to help stop the spread of germs.

Each week students from each class are awarded Student of the Week certificates. These children are nominated for the example they have been within the school based on the School Wide Expectation focus for that week. The weekly focus will be from Wednesday until Tuesday the following week. Awards will be presented to students in class until assemblies can resume.
In Week 10 the School Wide Expectation focus was: Resilience
I view mistakes as a learning opportunity.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and St. Michael’s Primary School is excited to be participating. A new application is being used this year that offers a range of exciting features including:
- access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
- a modern user-friendly interface
- rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
- the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 17 September 2021.
Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.
All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
