Dear Parents, Carers and Guardians,
The classrooms are a hive of excitement and joy as the Grade 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6 children are busily rehearsing for their Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod items. Please refer to the permission note that went home last week with further details of the day, including the time of your child’s performance. All students are required to wear their winter uniform, and they are most welcome to change into their sports uniform if they have a sports lesson on the day.
Shout out for packing boxes
We would be very appreciative of any strong packing boxes that you are no longer needing at home. In preparation for moving our library, we require strong cardboard boxes in good condition. If you have any, we would love to take them off your hands. Please drop them into the front office.
TheirCare
Please join us on Wednesday 20th August at 7pm for an online information session with TheirCare. TheirCare will be joining us as the new before and after school care provider and this session will be important for those wishing to utilise the service in the near future. You can access the zoom link in the flyer located further on this newsletter, or from the email sent to all families yesterday.
TheirCare will also be present at the Junior Athletics Carnival on Friday with a coffee van and show bags with information about their service. Be sure to drop past.
Junior Athletics Carnival
This Friday we welcome all parents and special visitors to the Junior Athletics Carnival being held in the school yard from 11:30am to 1pm. The Foundation to Grade 2 students will participate in a selection of rotations that have been developed by our student leaders. The students leaders have placed a lot of thought into the activities and have been supported by our Sports teacher, Michelle Coates.
Gates will open from 11:20am. Unfortunately we cannot open them any earlier due it being the children’s play time. We ask that parents remain in the playground, and grades will meet outside to receive their instructions. As a special treat, a coffee van has been arranged by TheirCare and will be located at the back of the playground, near the garden shed.
Please refer to the email sent to all families last week for further details. We look forward to a wonderful afternoon.
Parking around the school
We have been contacted by Latrobe City Council Local Laws and have been asked to remind parents about parking in designated parking bays at school drop off and pick up times. We are aware that a number of parents have received fines for parking in the driveway in front of the church, in Church Street. Latrobe City has advised that they will continue to fine parents parking in unmarked areas, and encourage parents to use the car park located across the road, or further down the street.
If parking on the opposite side of the road, please do not call your child to run across the street in traffic. Please walk across the road and supervise your child crossing the street.

Each week students from each class are awarded Student of the Week certificates. These children are nominated for the example they have been within the school based on the School Wide Expectation focus for that week. The weekly focus will be from Wednesday until Tuesday the following week. Awards will be given out at assembly on Friday.
In Week 5 the School Wide Expectation focus is Resilience:
I view mistakes as a learning opportunity.
I persist through challenges and difficulties in my learning.

This week’s gospel passage picks up one of the major themes that runs throughout the gospel of Luke: the message of salvation is not reserved exclusively for the Jews, but is for all people; Jew and Gentile alike. A number of times in this gospel, the writer makes a point of having Jesus relate this controversial and fairly unpopular message to his audience. Today’s gospel makes clear that to gain salvation, you have to do more than just show up! Like those knocking on the locked door and claiming friendship, we can’t just turn up at the last minute and expect to be accepted. Salvation – entrance into the kingdom of God – belongs to those who accept the message of Jesus and act on it for the rest of their lives.
The gospel makes plain to the Jewish people of the time that unless they accept the message of Jesus and act upon it, they will get a terrible shock ('weeping and grinding of teeth') at the coming of the kingdom. Jesus tells his audience that people who are faithful to his message, even though they may be Gentile, will gain salvation before anyone who thinks they deserve it because of their birth or title. The kingdom must be earned through faithful effort, not by just turning up and claiming to be a believer.
To be Christian is more than a name; more than a title. We can’t all live like Jesus all of the time. However, we are called to take Jesus as our model of the Christian life and to use his example as a guiding beacon. To call ourselves Christian is to try to be Christ-like in all our actions.
As you know last week Gen Bryant, singer /songwriter visited St Michael’s Parish Traralgon. It was a big few days with lots of singing, dancing and sharing.
Sunday evening Gen and her team sang at the parish mass. Many of our parishioners came along to enjoy the talents of Gen, Gerry, Antonia and Monty.
The staff of St Michael’s and St Gabriel’s gathered for a Professional learning day on Monday. Together we had the opportunity to listen as Gen shared stories of how her faith in Jesus has impacted her life, how her songs have come to life and the work that Gen has done with youth across the country. The staff participated in workshops, listening, sharing and, of course, singing and dancing.
Monday evening we gathered for a concert with the parish. This gave families and parishioners an opportunity to share in Gen’s ministry.
On Tuesday our Grade 5/6 students headed up to St Gabriel’s for workshops and a concert.
Gen is passionate about spreading the Gospel messages of hope, love and justice to young people.
A fabulous experience for all who participated. We thank God for the opportunity to share Gen’s talents, passion and faith.
The Parent Information night for the parents of children receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation is tonight.
The meeting will begin at 6pm in the new Parish Hall behind St Michael’s Church.
